The Junior Chamber International Hong Kong (JCIHK) announced the list of the “Ten Outstanding Young Persons (TOYP) 2023” on 11 October, and two HKBU alumni were selected this year. They are alumnus Cheung Wai-yin (Sports and Recreation Management), Explorer and Polar Researcher and alumna Ho Yuen-kei (China Studies), Team Hong Kong Boccia athlete.

Alumnus Wilson Cheung Wai-yin is the world’s first Chinese expert in polar exploration and scientific research. Being nominated the awardee of “The Explorers Club 50”, alumnus Cheung is the first researcher in the world focusing on monitoring the spatial distribution and temporal dynamics of glaciers in the Arctic highlands. He actively shares with young people his experiences from the North and South Pole, inspiring the new generation with his knowledge and insight.

While for alumna Ho Yuen-kei, her athletic pursuit has not been hindered by her mobility impairment due to Spinal Muscular Atrophy. She ranked the first in the Women’s BCS individual world ranking list in 2022. Alumna Ho recalled the memory of many “heroes” she encountered on campus, who encouraged and motivated her to become an accomplished boccia player.

With the theme of “Lead To Future”, TOYP Election 2023 aims to remind the youth in society that the future is determined by our present choices and actions. Congratulations to the two alumni!
