In collaboration with ETH Zurich, HKBU organized a public lecture “Augmented Reality, Creativity and the Arts”, one of the featured events under the Zurich meets Hong Kong – A Festival Of Two Cities programme.
An audience of hundreds including artists and designers, media and arts professionals, educationists, museum specialists, HKBU students, alumni and staff, as well as senior management of the University attended the lecture held at Tsang Chan Sik Yue Auditorium on 23 October at HKBU.
At his welcoming remarks, President Chin addressed that HKBU was a Liberal Arts University strong in creative media, where students, graduates as well as our faculty members in the Academy of Visual Arts, Academy of Film and Music Department, for example, had made notable achievements and were well recognized in the industry. He also emphasised that media arts or creative media had always been one of the flagships and defining characters for HKBU.
During the lecture, keynote speaker Prof. Robert Sumner, Associate Director of Disney Research Zurich (DRZ) and Founder of the ETH Zurich Game Technology Center, presented live demos to highlight his research on Augmented Creativity that showed the unique potential of augmented reality to enhance creative play. Dr. Bryan Chung Wai Ching, an interactive media artist and Associate Professor of the Academy of Visual Arts of HKBU, on the other hand, contrasted virtual reality and augmented reality concepts in the creative arts, including film and advertising, and showcased locally developed AR applications.
The lecture was concluded with a panel discussion moderated by Dr. Albert Chau, Vice-President (Teaching and Learning) of HKBU. Two panel members Prof. Emilie Yeh, Lam Wong Yiu Wah Chair Professor of Visual Studies, Department of Visual Studies, Lingnan University and Professor of the Academy of Film, HKBU and Mr. Peter Benz, Associate Professor of the Academy of Visual Arts, HKBU joined the speakers to further discuss the interplay of technology and art. Prof. Hans Werner Hess, Associate Head of Department of Government and International Studies of HKBU was the master of ceremonies.
