The University is deeply saddened by the passing of former US president and HKBU Honorary Doctorate recipient Dr Jimmy Carter on 29 December 2024 at the age of 100.

Since relinquishing the presidency, Dr Carter’s public works have continued unabated. In partnership with Emory University, he established The Carter Center (TCC) which, in his words, is about “helping people achieve better opportunities and watching hope take root where it languished before.” In 2011, HKBU officially started a joint venture with TCC, namely The Carter Center – Hong Kong Baptist University Initiative (TCC – HKBUI). The very first institutional tie established by TCC outside the US, the new initiative drew together the strengths and expertise of both institutions to spearhead a range of collaborative projects in educational, social and humanitarian areas for the advancement of society.

In recognition of Dr Carter’s remarkable achievements in bringing about meaningful change in society and the betterment of mankind in his post-presidency era, the University conferred the degree of Doctor of Humanities, honoris causa, on Dr Carter when he came to Hong Kong for TCC-HKBUI’s Commencement.

The University community would like to convey our heartfelt condolences to the Carter family at this time of bereavement. Dr Carter will always be remembered for his whole-hearted, significant contributions to the world as well as his enrichment of human well-being, and as a beloved and revered member of the HKBU community.

Professor Stoddart was a world-renowned and influential scientist. As a pioneer in molecular mechanostereochemistry, he established a new field in chemistry dedicated to the making of mechanical bonds to produce molecular shuttles, switches and machines. His remarkable achievements in the design and synthesis of molecular machines earned him the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2016.

Professor Stoddart’s contributions to the realm of chemistry were enormous. Beyond his groundbreaking research and scientific achievements, he dedicated himself to nurturing numerous young scientists, empowering them to make contributions to chemistry and materials science. In 2017, Professor Stoddart visited HKBU to generously share his thoughts at an International Symposium on Nanomachines. His legacy is characterised by his unwavering commitment to advancing scientific knowledge, leaving an indelible mark on the world and continuing to inspire future generations of scientists to pursue excellence.

The University community would like to convey our heartfelt condolences to Professor Stoddart’s family at this time of bereavement. He will always be remembered for his whole-hearted support for and contribution to the development of HKBU, and as a beloved and respected member of the HKBU community.
