HKBU Century Club Organises a Drama Performance Border Town and a Sharing Session

The performance attracts more than 500 audiences.

To enhance students’ understanding of contemporary novels and raise funds for the University, Hong Kong Baptist University Century Club (the Club) organised a drama performance Border Town which was staged on 21 October at the Academic Community Hall. The drama was co-organised by Hong Kong Baptist University Alumni Theatre (Alumni Theatre).

The show was graced by the presence of Dr Daniel Tse, President Emeritus cum honorary doctorate recipient; Professor Albert Chan, President Emeritus; Professor Roland Chin, President Emeritus; Mr Paul Poon, Deputy Chairman of the Council and the Court; Ms Rosanna Choi, Treasurer of the Council and the Court; Professor Martin Wong, Provost; Ms Christine Chow, Vice-President (Administration) and Secretary; Honorary University Fellow alumnus Professor William Leung (English Language & Literature), Honorary University Fellow alumnus Professor Sunny Wong (Business Management), HKBU Foundation Alumni Committee Chairman; Professor Nagar Lai, Member of HKBU Foundation Entrepreneur Committee; alumnus Professor Lo Ming-tung (Chinese Language and Literature), Head of Department of Chinese Language and Literature; Professor Michael Bray, Programme Director of Bachelor of Fine Arts (Hons) in Acting for Global Screen; Mrs Lily Chan, and Director of University Advancement; Dr Melanie Lee, Director of Alumni Affairs.

Proceeds of the show, excluding the expenses of the event, would be donated to the HKBU Century Club Fund to support the Extended Study Programme in Greater Bay Area (GBA) for HKBU students to participate in internships and various experiential learning activities in the GBA.

On 11 October, the Club also organised a sharing session for HKBU students to learn more about the preparation of the drama performance. Alumni Dr Mui Kwong-chiu, Original Music Composer; and Chan Chek-biu, Adapted Screenplay Writer and Director, were invited to share the journey of the music composition and screenplay adaptation, which was highly beneficial for the participants.

Department of Chinese and Language Literature and Alumni Affairs Office Co-organise a Seminar on Shen Congwen’s Literacy Creations

To echo the drama performance staged by HKBU Century Club at Academic Community Hall on 21 October, the Department of Chinese and Language Literature and the Alumni Affairs Office co-organised a seminar “A Brief Discussion of Shen Congwen’s Literary Creations” with the theme of “Singing Praise to Truth, Goodness, and Beauty”. In the seminar moderated by alumnus Prof Lo Ming-tung (Chinese Language and Literature), Head of Department of Chinese and Language Literature, alumnus Dr Poon Po-chiu (Chinese Language and Literature), Distinguished Alumni Award recipient, shared his insights on Shen Congwen’s literary works and engaged in insightful discussions. Dr Poon’s valuable sharing had significant benefits to all the participants.

 

Application Results of HKBU Century Club C&C Charitable Fund Dr Chiu Chi Sing and Ms Yeung Woon Bing Sponsorship Scheme 2023 Released

HKBU Century Club (the Club) launched its Sponsorship Scheme again and named as “HKBU Century Club C&C Charitable Fund Dr Chiu Chi Sing and Ms Yeung Woon Bing Sponsorship Scheme 2023” this year, with a view to providing financial support for the academic and student development projects of the University.

Chaired by alumnus Philip Kan (Business Management), Vice-President of the Club, the judging panel of the Scheme deliberated on the applications received, and decided to provide sponsorship to support the following University projects:

  1. Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science – Electrochemical Deposition of Phthalocyanines-Electrocatalysts for CO2 Conversion
  2. Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science – Solvent-based Recycling of Beverage Cartons Packaging Waste
  3. Department of Computer Science, Faculty of Science – HK x AI Open Cup 2023
  4. Department of Physics, Faculty of Science – Attending International Conference for UG students on Green Energy and Smart Technology
  5. Faculty of Science – Science Festival 2023 and 2024

Through the “HKBU Century Club C&C Charitable Fund Dr Chiu Chi Sing and Ms Yeung Woon Bing Sponsorship Scheme 2023”, HKBU Century Club (the Club) sponsored the AI x HK OpenCup 2023, which was co-organised by the Faculty of Science and the Department of Computer Science of HKBU. On 16 September, alumna Dr Marianna Tsang (Secretarial Management), Patron and President of the Club, delivered the opening remarks at the opening-cum-briefing of the event.

AI x HK OpenCup 2023 is an innovative artificial intelligence (AI) competition. The primary focus of the competition was centered on achieving four sustainable development goals set by the United Nations, namely Good Health and Well-being, Affordable and Clean Energy, Decent Work and Economic Growth, and Sustainable Cities and Communities. Participants were tasked with developing innovative AI solutions specifically designed for the context of Hong Kong. The competition attracted nearly 400 students from secondary schools and tertiary institutions to participate.

The 9th School of Chinese Medicine Honorary Professorship Conferment Ceremony-cum-Seminar, which was organised by the School of Chinese Medicine (SCM), was also sponsored by the Club this year. On behalf of the Club, President Dr Marianna Tsang and Dr Chiu Chi-sing, Patron of the Club, attended the Ceremony on 10 October.

This year, ten eminent scholars and experts with distinguished achievements in the Chinese medicine and healthcare-related arena were conferred honorary professorships. Subsequently, they delivered lectures on various topics during the seminar session. The event attracted approximately 500 local, mainland and overseas scholars, Chinese medicine practitioners, and members of the SCM community, who attended in person and online.

Alumna Dr Marianna Tsang (Secretarial Management) has lined-up Cambodia Kurmul International School (KIS) to provide service-learning opportunities for HKBU students. On 18 September, Mr Simon Kwok, Vice-Principal of KIS, paid a visit to HKBU to discuss an upcoming service-learning trip to Cambodia scheduled for early next year.
