HKBU Organises “BU Alumni Ensemble in Guangzhou - Celebrating 70 Years of Excellence: Embracing Transdisciplinarity, Research, and Innovation”

Over 320 alumni and friends assemble in Guangzhou to learn about the latest developments of HKBU.

The “BU Alumni Ensemble in Guangzhou” was successfully held in November at Grand Hyatt Guangzhou, Chinese Mainland. Hosting over 320 alumni and friends residing in Guangzhou and its neighbouring regions, this engagement initiative marked a special celebration for HKBU’s upcoming 70th anniversary, under the theme “Celebrating 70 Years of Excellence: Embracing Transdisciplinarity, Research, and Innovation.”

The event started with the singing of the University Anthem, led by the senior management, followed by welcome remarks delivered by Professor Alexander Wai, President and Vice-Chancellor of HKBU. In his welcome remarks, Professor Wai proudly shared the University’s latest developments and recent achievements in areas of global university rankings, transdisciplinary education and campus developments. He also updated the upcoming opening of the Chinese Medicine Hospital of Hong Kong, to be operated by HKBU in December 2025. Moreover, President Wai highlighted several prominent research projects and academic events in art-tech, humanities and culture, underscoring the University’s unwavering commitment to advancing innovation and transforming research outputs into tangible benefits for society, while celebrating its remarkable journey toward the 70th anniversary.

Following his remarks, President Wai was joined on stage by Dr Albert Chau, Vice-President (Teaching and Learning); Professor Daniel Lai, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences; Professor Zhang Han, Dean of the School of Business; Professor Zhong Bu, Dean of the School of Communication; and Professor Michael Ng, Dean of the Faculty of Science, to lead participants in a ceremonial act by unveiling the University’s 70th Anniversary logo and slogan. signifying the year-long celebration of the University.

The event was graced by the presence of alumnus Dr Jacinto Tong (Chemistry), member of the Council and the Court of HKBU, HKBU Honorary University Fellow and President of HKBU Alumni Association (HKBUAA), who also sponsored the event; alumnus Dr Chiu Chun-bong (Business Administration), HKBU Honorary Doctorate; alumni Prof Bernard Wu (Business Administration), Dr Vincent Ho (Communication), Philip Kan (Business Management), Dr Li Yuan (Applied Biology) and Lily Zhang (Media Management), members of Alumni Committee of HKBU Foundation; alumna Agnes Wong (Business Management), Patron and Vice-President of HKBU Century Club; alumna Bu Guimei (Business Administration), Founding Chairman of HKBU MBA (China) Alumni Association (MBA (China) AA); alumni Zhao Yongshuang (Business Administration) and Prof Huang Wo (Business Administration), Honorary Chairman of MBA (China) AA; alumnus Jacky Fan (Business Administration), Co-Chairman of MBA (China) AA; alumna Dr Sandy Xiao (Business Administration), Executive Chairwoman of MBA (China) AA; alumnus Xia Hui (Business Administration), Vice-Chairman and President of MBA (China) AA Zhuhai Chapter; alumna Jia Yi (Business Administration), Vice-Chairwoman and President of MBA (China) AA East China Chapter. The dinner was also well attended by members from HKBU Alumni Association of the Greater Bay Area (GBAAA), MBA (China) AA, HKBU Alumni Association of Macau, HKBU Alumni Runner, as well as alumni from Beijing Normal University-Hong Kong Baptist University and alumni came from 6 different Faculties and Schools.

During the dinner, student Ma Wai-yin (Physical Education and Recreation Management), a rhythmic gymnastics athlete, delivered a captivating performance. Representatives of GBAAA and MBA (China) AA also took the opportunity to present gifts to President Wai to commemorate the 70th anniversary of alma mater. The evening culminated in a finale when senior management and alumni representatives, including the Alumni Committee of HKBU Foundation, HKBUAA, HKBU Century Club, GBAAA, MBA (China) AA, along with MBA student Wen Xinxin, joined together in a group singing of Strolling Down the Road of Life..

This event provided a valuable opportunity for alumni in Chinese Mainland to connect and foster networks while learning about the University’s latest developments. As HKBU approaches its 70th anniversary, the University remains steadfast in strengthening its bonds with alumni in Chinese Mainland, paving the way for the next chapter of excellence.
