Science Alumni Celebrates the Year of the Rooster

Nearly 170 alumni, staff, students and friends of Faculty of Science gathered at Madam Kwok Chung Bo Fun Sports and Cultural Centre of HKBU campus on 18 February in celebration for the Year of the Rooster. VIP guests included Prof. Rick Wong, Vice-President (Research & Development); Dr. Albert Chau, Vice-President (Teaching & Learning); Prof. Ricky Wong, Associate Vice-President; Ir. Prof. Ko Jan-ming, former Head of the Faculty’s Department of Civil Engineering; Dr. John Chan, former Dean of Science; Mr. Alfred Lee, Chairman of Faculty Advisory Committee; alumnus Leung Ka-wing (Physics), Chairman of the Steering Committee on Alumni Relations of the Faculty; Dr. Tong Chong-sze, Secretary General of Hong Kong Examinations & Assessment Authority, former Academic Registrar and Associate Dean of Science; and Prof. Chan Wing-hong, Emeritus Professor in Chemistry attended the gathering.

Prof. Chris Wong, Acting Dean of Science took this opportunity to thank alumni for their continuous support to the University and update the recent development of the Faculty. Prof. Rick Wong, Vice-President (Research & Development) and former Dean of Science said it was a great opportunity for him to meet with alumni and he was impressed by their enthusiasm in maintaining close ties with their alma mater.

The highlight of the gathering was a splendid performance of a live band formed by a group of alumni, which earned big applause from audience. The atmosphere reached the climax when alumni took part in fun-filled interactive games. The Most Active Participation Award, in recognition of alumni’s staunch support to the Faculty’s events, was presented to Baptist Chemists again this year. Everyone had an enjoyable afternoon together with their old buddies.

Science Alumni Shares Career Experience in Aviation Industry

Co-organised with HKBU Biology Alumni Association and HKBU Department of Computer Science Alumni Association, the Faculty of Science successfully staged the second Alumni Sharing Series “Career in the Aviation” for the academic year 2016-17. The sharing session was held on 25 February at Fong Shu Chuen Library on Ho Sin Hang Campus and attracted nearly 70 students, alumni and staff. It was graced by the presence of Prof. Ricky Wong, Associate Vice-President (Teaching and Learning) and Vice-Chairman of Faculty’s Steering Committee on Alumni Relations; Prof. Chris Wong, Acting Dean of Science and other faculty members. Four outstanding Science alumni were invited as speakers, including alumni May Poon Nim-tsz (Biology), Flight Purser of Cathay Pacific Airways Limited; Bert Ng Chi-mun (Biology), Assistant Manager of Hong Kong Air Cargo Industry Services Limited; Marcus Chan Lap-chun (Computer Science), Air Traffic Control Officer of Civil Aviation Department; and Kenneth Ip Wing-hang (Computer Science), System Analyst of Cathay Pacific Airways Limited. They shared their experience on landing a career on the aviation field and gave insights about the industry.

The sharing session was moderated by Prof. Joseph Ng from the Department of Computer Science. At Q&A session, participants showed great interests in job seeking tips and career opportunities in the aviation industry.
