In Memory of Professor Deng Tietao

The University is deeply saddened by the passing of Professor Deng Tietao, HKBU Doctor of Science, honoris causa, and Honorary Professor in the School of Chinese Medicine, on 10 January 2019. He was 104 years old.

Professor Deng is universally acknowledged as a monumental and indispensable figure in the development and history of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) in the 20th century, and he is particularly well-known as “The Grand Master of TCM in China”. His life-long contribution to TCM teaching, research and clinical service have had a significant impact on the development of TCM in modern China.

Professor Deng served on numerous high-level committees in the national government and the Ministry of Public Health. He also published extensively during his career, winning numerous provincial and national awards, prizes and honours for his original research and monographs.

A long-time friend of our School of Chinese Medicine, Professor Deng donated a collection of valuable books on Chinese medicine to support the teaching, research and clinical endeavours of the School in 2016.

The University community would like to convey our heartfelt condolences to Professor Deng’s family. Professor Deng made many lasting contributions to the University and TCM sector and he will be deeply missed.
