Alumni and Celebrities Share Precious Experience in Filmmaking

Four film professionals shared their valuable views on the Hong Kong film industry’s development at a forum “Fly High! The Showbiz Sky!” held on 29 January 2013. The event, organised by the Alumni Affairs Office, the Academy of Film of the School of Communication and the Office of Student Affairs, attracted over 400 participants.

The four distinguished speakers included film director and alumnus Mr. Herman Yau, film director and alumnus Mr. Felix Chong, Chief Executive Officer of Emperor Entertainment Group Limited Mr. Ng Yu, and artiste Mr. Chapman To.

In his welcoming address, Professor Albert Chan, President and Vice-Chancellor, said that professional knowledge and creativity are important aspects of Whole Person Education, and they are the origin of art, culture, film and media development. He also encouraged students in the audience to learn from the speakers and be creative, vigilant and successful.

At the forum, the speakers expressed the view that as Hong Kong films are no longer restricted to the local market and are screened in Mainland China and international markets, the diversity of film stories and creativity are important to the success of the films.

They also shared their personal experiences. Mr. Yau said he never saw filmmaking as an easy path to success and making money, and that those who are really passionate about films should persevere. Mr. Chong started his career writing letters and discovered his screenwriting talent later. His strong belief in “never settling” motivated him to make the change from being a screenwriter to being a director. Entertainment industry guru Mr. Ng Yu gave the audience wise tips for success and pointed out that personality influences management effectiveness. He told students to set and pursue career goals at an early stage. Last but not least, Mr. To expressed his conviction in supporting filmmaking for the local market and emphasised the importance of persistence and seizing opportunities as they come.

Chaired by Ms. Melanie Lee, Director of Alumni Affairs, the panel discussion invited the speakers to answer questions from the participants. After the discussion, the speakers gave the last piece of advice to HKBU students - Study hard, apply the knowledge in jobs and keep learning.
