In Memory of The Hon Arnaldo de Oliveira Sales

The University is deeply saddened by the passing of The Hon Arnaldo de Oliveira Sales on 6 March 2020. He was 100 years old.

Mr Sales was a distinguished civic and sports leader in Hong Kong, and in 2001 he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Social Sciences honoris causa by HKBU in recognition of his exemplary contributions. Thanks to his vision and efforts, Hong Kong retained its status as a separate sporting entity after its reunification with mainland China, and athletes were able to participate in international competitions under the banner of “Hong Kong, China”. This move led to continued support and worldwide exposure for Hong Kong athletes.

As one of the founding members of the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, Mr Sales held different key positions in the organisation, and he was President for more than 30 years. During this time he made many tremendous contributions to the Hong Kong sports sector.

Mr Sales was also deeply committed to sports education in Hong Kong, and he was very supportive of the undergraduate physical education programme launched by HKBU in 1992. In particular, he lent his support to the organisation of international conferences and seminars on sports education, which lifted the profile of sports education both at the University and in the community-at-large. He also established the Mrs Edith N. de O. Sales Scholarship to award outstanding postgraduate students of our Master of Social Sciences in Sport and Leisure Management programme. His active participation in the community also made him a great role model, and he has left a lasting impact on society.

The University community would like to convey our heartfelt condolences to the Sales family at this time of bereavement. Mr Sales will always be remembered for his whole-hearted support for and distinguished contributions to the development of the University and as a beloved and respected member of the HKBU community.
The Hon Arnaldo de Oliveira Sales

In Memory of Dr John P Chan

The University is deeply saddened by the passing of Dr John P Chan, former Dean of the Faculty of Science, on 19 March 2020. He was 84 years old.

Dr Chan became Dean in 1972 following the renaming of the Faculty as the Faculty of Natural Science and Engineering. He concurrently served as the Head of the Department of Chemistry from 1972 to 1975.

Among Dr Chan’s diverse contributions, he was well recognised for spearheading the establishment of the Faculty’s links with industry. This proved to be an effective strategy for raising the Faculty’s profile and image in Hong Kong, and it enabled faculty members to share their expertise and serve the community. Under his leadership, the Department of Biology and the Department of Chemistry joined hands to conduct a baseline aquatic environmental investigation for the Dow Chemical Company between September 1974 and October 1975.

The University community would like to convey our heartfelt condolences to Dr Chan’s family at this time of bereavement. Dr Chan will always be remembered for his dedication and distinguished contributions to the development of the University as well as the Faculty of Science, and as a beloved and respected member of the HKBU community.

Dr John P Chan
