President Chin Invited as Founding Honorary Advisor of Belt and Road International Professional Alumni Association

President Prof. Roland Chin was invited by Belt and Road International Professional Association (BRIPA) to be one of their Founding Honorary Advisors. At the Association’s inauguration ceremony held on 22 February at Hong Kong City Hall, Director of Alumni Affairs Dr. Melanie Lee received the certificate on behalf of President Chin from the Association.

Science Alumni Celebrates the Year of the Dog

Nearly 130 alumni, staff, students and friends of Faculty of Science gathered at Madam Kwok Chung Bo Fun Sports and Cultural Centre of HKBU campus on 10 March to celebrate the Year of the Dog. HKBU senior management and external guests also came to join the gathering.

Vice-President (Research & Development) Prof. Rick Wong took this opportunity to share with alumni the latest development of the University, including the 10-year Institutional Strategic Plan and the Talent 100 Scheme that aimed at recruiting 100 academic staff globally over the next three to five years. On the other hand, Dean of Science Professor Zhang Jianhua outlined the latest achievement and development of the Faculty at the event.

All participants had an enjoyable time indulged in the splendid performance brought by Associate Vice-President (Teaching and Learning) cum Academic Registrar Prof. Ricky Wong, Associate Professor and Programme Director of Department of Chemistry Dr. Ken Leung, and Lecturer of Department Computer Science Dr. Jean Lai.

During the gathering, the Faculty also presented “The Most Active Participation Award” in recognition of the staunch support by alumni to the University’s events. The award went to Baptist Chemists who have received it for the third year in a row.

Science Alumni Share Experience in Environmental Education and Animal Care

Co-organised with the HKBU Biology Alumni Association and the Department of Biology, the Faculty of Science staged “Environmental Educator / Animal Carer – My Cup of Tea?”, the second session under Alumni Sharing Series for the academic year 2017-18. The event was held on 24 March held at Fong Shu Chuen Library on Ho Sin Hang Campus, attracting around 100 alumni, students and staff to attend together with the presence of two Associate Deans of Science, Prof. Chris Wong and Dr. Daniel Kwong as well as Treasurer of HKBU Biology Alumni Association alumnus Dr. Stephan Sze.

Four outstanding Biology alumni were invited to share their career experience in the field of environmental education, conversation and animal care, and discuss the importance of protecting the environment and endangered species. They were alumni Lily Cheung, Discovery and Education Manager of Ocean Park Hong Kong; Celia Fung, former Environmental Affairs Officer of Friends of Earth (HK); Silvy Pun, former spokesperson of Shark Savers Hong Kong and Vincent Siu, Assistant Curator of Terrestrial Sciences of Ocean Park Hong Kong.

The sharing session was moderated by Lecturer of Department of Biology Dr. Sung Yik-hei. At the Q&A session, participants showed great interests in the career prospects of the environmental education and animal care sectors.
