The Annual Graduation Performance of Performing Arts Courses Organized by HKBUAA of Southern California

Since 1999, the Hong Kong Baptist University Alumni Association of Southern California has been giving unfailing support in nurturing new blood in performing arts through organising courses of various themes for adults from all walks of life. Participants are required to conduct a post-course stage production, known as the graduation performance, before being awarded the Course Completion Certificate. The performances have been highly acclaimed by the local municipal officials.

One of the Association’s Board Members, Alumnus John Mark Ho, has been committed to promoting the trainings and running quarterly courses through promotion and directing the graduation performance. One of the examples is the 3-Act-10-Scene drama "Who's the Winner?", which is a comedy about the humorous daily conflicts between husband and wife written by a Chinese playwright from San Francisco. Actors and actresses of this drama are graduates of the performing courses who have been rehearsing for a year to bring this annual production up to the professional level. The "Trophy of Creative Play Writing (2002 - 2012)" will also be presented at the performance to honor the playwrights’ outstanding efforts and achievements over the past ten years.

The Association also runs a Cantonese Opera Troupe which travelled to perform in Portland, San Francisco, and to Hong Kong to celebrate HKBU’s 50th and 55th anniversaries. The Troupe has also been invited by the Oregon State University and The City College of San Francisco to give educational demonstrations and performances.

Over the past 13 years, the Association has offered the following courses: Acting, Directing, Stage Make-up, Scenery Design, Script Writing, M.C. Training, and Cantonese Opera Performing. Many of the course graduates are now serving in the local radio stations.
