Alumna Lian Luo, Second Officer at Cathay Pacific
Navigating Unconventional Paths with Confidence and Resilience
Alumna Lian Luo
Alumna Lian Luo (BNBU – International Journalism) discovered her passion for aviation during her studies at Beijing Normal – Hong Kong Baptist University (BNBU), formerly known as Beijing Normal University–Hong Kong Baptist University United International College. Inspired by a senior classmate, she chose to forgo a master’s degree in the U.S. and joined Emirates as a cabin crew member, taking her first step into the aviation world. Her interactions in working with pilots deepened her interest in flying, leading her to get trained in South Africa and earn a Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL). Despite pandemic-related hiring freezes, she remained committed, working in the Middle East while pursuing opportunities to fly.
In 2023, Alumna Lian applied to Cathay Pacific’s Cadet Pilot Programme and was selected, becoming one of the first Mainland Chinese cadets to complete training and join the airline. Now serving as a Second Officer, she began flying commercial routes in May 2025, marking the start of her journey as a professional pilot.
1. Initially, you changed your path from studying journalism to pursuing a career in aviation, starting as a cabin crew member and eventually becoming a pilot, each step marking a significant change in your life. How did the experiences you had during your time at BNBU influence your personal and professional development? Did you encounter any obstacles when making such a bold transition and pursuing a career in aviation?
I think all my decisions regarding career and education stemmed from my confidence in my own abilities. During my time at BNBU, I spent a great deal of time participating in student activities such as the Student Union and ENACTUS. These transformative experiences enriched my skill set and nurtured me into a well-rounded adult, equipped with a diverse array of professional and life skills, in contrast to the more sheltered and inexperienced novice before studying at college.
Transitioning into the aviation realm presented its own set of obstacles, particularly stemming from my non-STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) background. I often struggled with subjects like physics, meteorology, and mechanics during the Cadet Pilot Programme. However, I do believe that my journalism background gave me a distinct advantage in communication and interpersonal skills, qualities that are highly valued in pilot selection. With determination and the right mindset, I have learned that even unconventional paths can lead to extraordinary destinations.
Meanwhile, extensive academic projects and coursework taught me how to be a proactive, self-directed learner. To be honest, my primary concern was not on “Will I be able to make it through the courses?”, but rather “Will I be able to secure employment afterward?” I have realised we cannot control what the future brings. Instead, the best we can do is embrace the journey, making the most of every opportunity along the way.

2. The pandemic was a challenging period for many industries, particularly the aviation industry. During this time, you chose to temporarily shift your career path and took on an administrative role at the Middle East branch of a Chinese company. How did this experience impact your original career plans? Amid uncertainty and change, how did you stay committed to your dream of becoming a pilot? Was there a particular belief or source of motivation that kept you going?
My previous employer operated globally and I am grateful to have been a part of the team. That job allowed me to apply the skills I developed in the Journalism programme at BNBU to my daily tasks, such as effective communication with people, photo and video editing and much more. Over those three years of work experience, I grew into the role of Administrative Manager, leading a team of over 50 people and managing a large office space that served 400 employees.
While working as an Administrative Manager at my previous job, I truly enjoyed every moment there. However, I kept my framed Commercial Pilot Epaulettes and my flight training notebook on my office desk, they always reminded me of my ultimate dream. My husband, who has worked in aviation industry throughout, has been my greatest support and motivation to encourage me to return to my original path when the opportunity finally arose. And it did.
During training, I did face challenge of leaving my young child and family behind, but my husband understood that this was my dream and believed it could ultimately improve our family’s quality of life. His unwavering support gave me strength to persevere. My experience as both a wife and mother shows that family roles do not have to limit career aspirations. I encourage fellow alumni not to let family responsibilities hold you back from pursuing your career goals.

3. After becoming a Second Officer, what are your expectations for future development in the aviation industry? What advice would you offer to fellow alumni or students who are considering unconventional career paths or industry transition?
At this juncture in my career as a Second Officer, my focus is on continuous learning and skill refinement. I aim to accumulate valuable experience and enhance my capabilities. I strongly believe that true growth occurs when consistent efforts lead to significant transformation, transitioning from quantitative growth to a qualitative leap. As I progress, I aspire to take on roles with greater responsibility, leveraging my skills and experience to contribute meaningfully to the aviation industry.
This is the advice I would offer to everyone pursuing a career or a dream: Prepare yourself fully for whatever you are doing at the moment. Every step you take lays the foundation for what comes next. When it comes to turning aspirations into reality, action always speaks louder than words. Don’t just talk about your goals, take meaningful steps toward them. Information gathering is also key, as most resources are readily available online. Curiosity and initiative can open doors you never imagined.
Waiting for the perfect moment is futile; instead, start from where you are, use what you have, and build from there. Once you have developed both the competence and confidence to embrace new opportunities, you will be ready to embark on the adventure of a lifetime in pursuit of your dream.
