Faculty of Science and Alumni Affairs Office Jointly Organise a Talk – Networked Brain: Complex Systems Approach to Cognition and Mental Health

All participants pose for a group photo.

Faculty of Science and Alumni Affairs Office proudly present a talk series that highlights the significant contributions HKBU’s pre-eminent faculty members, professors and alumni have made in their remarkable journey of knowledge discovery. Through this faculty-students-alumni engagement initiative, both offices hope to shine light on the achievements of our faculty members, nurture future-shaping students and engage alumni who bring transformative impact to society.

The first talk of the series was successfully held on 12 February on HKBU campus, attracting over 220 registrants including students, alumni and guests. The event commenced with welcoming remarks by Professor Michael Ng, Dean of the Faculty of Science. In his remarks, Prof Ng emphasised that the Faculty has championed transdisciplinary ventures and collaborations in educational programmes and research activities, and the talk demonstrated how transdisciplinary collaborations play a pivotal role in making meaningful societal impact.

The talk featured Professor Changsong Zhou, Chair Professor in Physics and Complex Systems in the Department of Physics, as the keynote speaker. Prof Zhou gave an enlightening sharing on the topic, “Networked Brain: Complex Systems Approach to Cognition and Mental Health”. In his sharing, Prof Zhou delved deep into the complexity of the human brain, and showed how his transdisciplinary research explores the interrelationship between brain network activity, cognition and diseases. Following Prof Zhou’s presentation, a sharing session featuring Professor Liila Taruffi, Assistant Professor in Music Psychology of the Academy of Music and alumnus Dr Martin Ma (Green Energy Science), Programme Director of BSc in Green Energy and Smart Technology and Lecturer in the Department of Physics was held. The sharing session was moderated by alumnus Leung Ka-wing (Physics), a current member of the Town Planning Board and a host of an evergreen radio programme.

The event was graced by the presence of Ms Christine Chow, Vice-President (Administration) and Secretary. After the sharing session, Ms Chow presented a souvenir to alumnus Leung Ka-wing as a token of appreciation.
