Dr Sunny Chai Ngai-chiu, Deputy Chairman of the Council and the Court and Honorary University Fellow of HKBU, has been appointed by the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the San Tin Technopole Company Limited. The appointment is for a term of three years with effect from 1 July 2026. Congratulations to Dr Chai!

Dr Stanley Yim Yuk-lun (Doctor of Business Administration, honoris causa) has been re-appointed by the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China as member of the Independent Police Complaints Council for a term of two years with effect from 1 June 2026. Congratulations to Dr Yim!

Alumnus Professor Justin Chiu (Sociology; Doctor of Social Sciences, honoris causa), Executive Director of CK Asset Holdings Limited and Adjunct Professor of the School of Business, re-assumed the role as Chairman of the HKBU School of Business Advisory Committee for a term of two years. Congratulations to Professor Chiu!

Ms Quince Chong Wai-yan (Honorary University Fellow) and Ms Connie Wong Wai-ching (Honorary University Fellow) have been appointed by the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China as non-official members of the Working Group on Patriotic Education under the Constitution and Basic Law Promotion Steering Committee with effect from 4 May 2026 to 31 December 2027. Congratulations to Ms Chong and Ms Wong!

Alumni Sheena Chan Shu-yan (Acting for Global Screen) and Jess Li Mei-yan (Creative Film Production) were awarded at the 34th Hong Kong Drama Awards, organised by Hong Kong Federation of Drama Societies, held on 27 April. Alumna Sheena Chan Shu-yan won the Best Musical Leading Actress for her performance in the Musical WestK x HKRep: The Impossible Trial – a musical (Hong Kong rerun), while alumna Jess Li Mei-yan won the Best Musical Supporting Actress for performing the What the Buddha Said. Congratulations to two alumni!

Alumna Dr Marianna Tsang (Secretarial Management), Patron and Past President/Ex-officio Director of HKBU Century Club, was appointed Honorary President of Fire Services Department Community Emergency Responder (Yau Tsim Mong District) for the term of 2026-2028 at the Inauguration Ceremony of the 1st Community Emergency Responder Honorary Presidents’ Association of Fire Services Department, held on 22 April. In her role, alumna Dr Tsang will advise on the activities and development of fire safety in the respective district and render support as appropriate. Congratulations to alumna Dr Tsang!

The Movie Ciao UFO, directed by alumnus Patrick Leung Pak-kin (Communication) and produced and written by alumna Amy Chin Siu-wai (Communication), won five awards at the 44th Hong Kong Film Awards held on 19 April, including Best Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Original Film Song. Congratulations to two alumni!

Alumnus Duffy Lau (Business Administration), formerly Managing Director of Grey Hong Kong, has recently been promoted to Chief Executive Officer of the Ogilvy Group Hong Kong. In this role, he will oversee leadership across the Group’s Hong Kong agency brands, Ogilvy Hong Kong and Grey Hong Kong. Congratulations to alumnus Lau!

The University is deeply saddened by the passing of legendary theatre veteran Dr Chung King-fai, who passed away on 3 June 2026, at the age of 89.

Over the years, Dr Chung tirelessly advanced the development of theatre in Hong Kong, holding theatre education close to his heart. After returning to Hong Kong from his studies in 1962, he joined Hong Kong Baptist College as an Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature, where he taught drama, marking the first time drama courses were offered in Hong Kong’s tertiary institutions. As advisor to the Dramatics Club, he directed students in fundraising performances of classics including Death of a Salesman and Our Town. Even after transitioning into the television and broadcasting industry, his passion for drama never wavered. He continued to teach drama part-time at the College, nurturing aspiring thespians and inspiring them through his generosity of spirit and kindness for 23 years.

Dedicating his life to the stage, Dr Chung played a pivotal role in shaping the evolution of Hong Kong theatre for more than half a century. His legacy will be remembered not only for what he accomplished, but also for the lives he touched through his exemplary work and dedication to his craft.

The University also remains deeply grateful for Dr Chung’s immense trust in donating his lifelong collection of theatrical archives and personal documents, the “Chung King Fai Collection”, which is kept in the Library’s permanent collection. Through these archives, the legacy of Hong Kong’s “King of Drama” will live on and remain a lasting inspiration for generations to come.

The University community would like to convey our heartfelt condolences to Dr Chung’s family. His invaluable contribution to Hong Kong’s performing arts industry and to the education sector, as well as his wise counsel and remarkable leadership will be deeply missed.
